Professor John Mayer

I am the current Chair of the NSG and was one of its founder members in 1990.

Prior to my semi-retirement in 2008 I was the Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Nottingham’s School of Biomedical Sciences. For over 25 years I was engaged in research into Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body Disease, Parkinson’s and Motor Neurone Disease. I was Chairman of the Research Advisory Panel of the British Motor Neurone Disease Association from 2007-2010.

My team’s work at the School of Biomedical Sciences made a significant contribution to understanding the links between neurodegenerative diseases – notably the presence of ubiquitin containing inclusions in specific brain cells. Although our work was financed by government and national charity sources the NSG played a key role in funding the costs of new equipment, supplies, PhD projects and organizing public and professional research awareness events.

I am a keen golfer, playing regularly, and walker. I enjoy travelling, giving talks and meeting collaborators around the world.
